Date Wednesday, October 22
Kick-off 8pm
Venue Stade Louis II, Monaco
Competition Champions League

Tottenham will be hoping to bounce back from Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa when they head to Monaco for their third Champions League game of the season, and Thomas Frank will want a calmer evening than he endured last time at Bodo/Glimt.

Spurs had to come from 2-0 down to earn a draw in Norway and their opponents on Wednesday have already proved a match for Premier League opposition in the competition by drawing 2-2 with Manchester City.

However, they will be playing their first Champions League game under Sebastien Pocognoli after he replaced Adi Hutter during the international break.

Monaco vs Tottenham preview

After the rollercoaster course of Ange Postecoglou’s final few months in charge of Tottenham, things seem to have calmed down following Thomas Frank’s arrival, even if Spurs have still proved they are capable of disappointing home results.

However, they go into their latest Champions League game at Monaco having gone five away games without a defeat, and they could cut loose on their travels.

Frank’s team have found it difficult to break teams down at home – they have failed to register an expected-goals (xG) figure of more than 0.8 in any of their last four matches on their own patch and that peak figure came against Wolves, who are still looking for their first Premier League win and came within just a few seconds of getting off the mark on their visit to north London.

It has been different on the road as Spurs look to break quickly and exploit gaps, and they have demonstrated they are not a soft touch by battling back to earn draws from two-goal deficits against both Brighton and in their last European game against Bodo/Glimt. There looks to be every chance that Wednesday’s meeting at the Stade Louis II should be another high-scoring occasion.

Monaco staged their own late recovery with a penalty from ex-Tottenham defender Eric Dier which earned a 2-2 home draw with Manchester City, and the emphasis will be on the Ligue 1 side to push forward as they were beaten 4-1 by Club Brugge on matchday one when Spurs gained a 1-0 win over Villarreal courtesy of a terrible goalkeeper error.

The French top-flight outfit have had two further draws with Nice and Angers and a change of manager since the Citizens game, and new gaffer Sebastien Pocognoli’s stock is high after he led Union Saint-Gilloise to their first Belgian title for 90 years.

However, he needs to shore up a defence who have failed to keep a clean sheet in ten matches this season and that is something else that points towards an open affair.

While a change of manager has brought a degree of solidity at Spurs, they remain untrustworthy even though they were inspired on the road in victories against West Ham and City.

The threat is there from both teams, but it is difficult to have much faith in either outfit holding out, so it looks a more sensible policy to back them both to find the net in what should be a high-scoring encounter.

Bergvall should be positive in final third

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall continues to develop into an exciting prospect and while he came on in the closing stages against Villa, he has started both of the Lilywhites’ matches in Europe this season.

The Swede requires no second invitation to move into advanced areas and while his goal in the 3-0 win at West Ham was the only time he has been on the mark this season, he could still muster a shot on target at the Stade Louis II.

Dutchman may fall foul of officials

It could be an interesting evening for Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, who despite his qualities does not look as assured when he is not playing alongside Cristian Romero.

The Dutchman picked up his second booking of the Premier League season against Villa and he has also been cautioned in both of Spurs’ European games this term, so the price about him picking up a yellow card again looks quite generous in what could prove a frenetic encounter.
