The driver of a semi-truck was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after an eight-vehicle crash involving multiple big rigs killed three people and injured several others Tuesday, Oct. 21, on the 10 Freeway in Ontario, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 1:10 p.m. on the westbound 10 Freeway west of the 15 Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez. Four of the vehicles involved were commercial big rigs.

A preliminary investigation found that one of the semi-trucks failed to stop as traffic slowed, triggering a chain-reaction crash, Jimenez said.

Two of the fatal victims were inside a vehicle that caught fire following the collision, Jimenez said. The third victim, a 54-year-old man from Upland, was driving a pickup truck. None of the victims’ names had been released as of Wednesday morning.

The driver of the semi-truck that caused the crash, Jashanpreet Singh, 21, from Yuba City, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter later in the day.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 1:30 p.m. advising westbound mainline lanes of the 10, west of the 15, were closed for the investigation.
