PHOENIX – One of the fun side quests during Phoenix Suns training camp was this mysterious Villain Jr. nickname that invaded the airwaves. First mentioned by “The Villain” himself in newcomer Dillon Brooks, who stated it’s not who people would think. However, many fans took to social media to theorize on who Brooks was talking about, with many coming to the same answer, which Brooks confirmed on the Suns’ social media account on Friday.

Brooks announces Villain Jr.’s identity:
Gillespie makes perfect sense to take up the Villain Jr. mantle from Brooks. When the identity was still unknown, the former all-defensive team member mentioned that the player was a hard-nosed player who wanted the title. Fans saw first hand the intensity that Gillespie brought to the court in his first season in Phoenix last season and has ramped up in training camp.

From the short snippets of practice footage that has been released, Gillespie is following the footsteps of Brooks of being a tough, confident and talkative player on the court. Ever since going undrafted in 2023, Gillespie has had a chip on his shoulder to prove himself to people, similar to the upbringing of Brooks into the league.
Brooks grew from a reserve player to being an elite role player that could start on any contenders team. Gillespie’s hunger and aspirations to reach those same heights seemed to have gravitate him towards being under Brooks tutelage and being bestowed the title of Villain Jr. for this upcoming season.
