The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an alert as millions of people risk being left out of pocket. Many older people can expect payments from the DWP over the coming weeks, with eligible pensioners set to receive up to £300 each.

People born on or before September 21, 1959, who were residing in England or Wales during the qualifying week (September 15-21, 2025) will be entitled to the funds. However, the DWP is warning people against responding to text messages, as they risk being conned of their money.

In a statement on X, previously known as Twitter, the DWP declared: “If you get a text about the ‘Winter Fuel Payment’ or the ‘Winter Fuel Allowance’, it is a scam. Winter Fuel Payments are automatic, you do not need to do anything.” People are also advised to report any dubious messages here

The payments are processed automatically, meaning no action is required on your part, and responding to fraudulent text messages could mean scammers can access – and therefore withdraw money – from your bank account. If you or your partner have reached State Pension age, you may be entitled to £200 towards your household bills.

Should you or your partner be over 80, you could qualify for £300. For those who meet the criteria, the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025 will be transferred directly into your account between November and December 2025.

Your Winter Fuel Payment will be clawed back through the taxation system if your taxable income exceeds £35,000.
