Smriti Mandhana seemingly failed to realise that she edged a delivery as the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup clash between India and New Zealand saw some bizarre scenes on Thursday (October 23) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The incident happened in the 27th over of the match as Mandhana missed a sweep from Amelia Kerr’s bowling. The on-field umpire was quick to raise his finger. The Indian vice-captain was batting at 77 when the incident occurred. She held a discussion with Pratika Rawal and took a review just as the timer was set to end.
However, in a bizarre sequence of events, Mandhana was convinced she was out despite taking the review. She started to walk back towards the dressing room immediately after signalling for the review. However, what the replays showed left her stunned. The snicometre showed she had edged the delivery, and she was allowed to resume her innings. The incident suprised many as batters usually realise if they have edged a delivery.
Mandhana made the most of his second chance, as after scoring half-centuries in the last two games, she completed her maiden century of the ongoing tournament. She reached the milestone in just 89 balls while putting a mammoth opening partnership with Rawal.
Smriti Mandhana Creates History
The ton is Mandhana’s 14th ODI century, leaving her just one behind Meg Lanning in the elite list of women’s players with the most centuries in 50-over cricket. Overall, this is the 17th century of the Indian star’s career in international cricket across formats, which is the joint most in history alongside Lanning.
This is Mandhana’s 5th ODI ton in 2025, which is the joint-most alongside South Africa’s Tazmin Britz in a calendar year.
Overall, this is Mandhana’s third ton in the history of the Women’s World Cup, with the joint-most for India alongside Harmanpreet Kaur.
The Indian opener has crossed 300 runs in the ongoing tournament and is the player to do so despite a slow start.
