Josh Philippe, who made his home debut in Perth last week, has been replaced by regular wicketkeeper Alex Carey in Australia’s starting XI for the second ODI against India.

Despite putting on a strong show in the series opener, Philippe, who impressed with both bat and gloves, now faces the prospect of missing out. Australia won by seven wickets at Optus Stadium thanks to the 28-year-old’s quick 37 off 29 balls and two sharp catches behind the stumps.

However, the Australian team management has decided to bring its senior gloveman back into the starting lineup now that Carey has fully recovered from a minor ailment that kept him out of the first ODI.

With Josh Inglis also part of Australia’s broader white-ball setup, Philippe’s expected omission highlights the team’s impressive depth in the wicketkeeping department.

Even though he missed out this time, Philippe remains determined to stay ready and make the most of his next international opportunity.

If the opportunity is to come for me, it’s in the middle order (for Australia),” the 28-year-old Philippe told cricket.com.au ahead of the second ODI here on Thursday.

India are unchanged, while Australia made two changes, bringing in Alex Carey for Josh Philippe and Xavier Bartlett in place of Nathan Ellis.

Teams:

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Travis Head, Matthew Short, Matthew Renshaw, Alex Carey (wk), Cooper Connolly, Mitchell Owen, Xavier Bartlett, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

India: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wk), Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj.
