Popular Coca-Cola sodas recalled due to potential contamination. See affected products.

Something you bought was just recalled. What does that mean?

What happens when something you purchase is recalled? Is it voluntary or mandatory? And what does it mean for you?

Three popular Coca-Cola sodas have been recalled due to potential metal contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Oct. 20.

The FDA said the recall of select Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Coca-Cola, and Sprite cans was classified as a Class II recall. The risk classification from the federal agency indicates that the recalled products could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” but that the chances of serious adverse health consequences are “remote.”

The recall, initiated by bottler Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages on Oct. 3, covers over 4,000 cans of soda distributed in Texas. The FDA did not provide guidance on what to do with the recalled products, and Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages did not issue a news release with the recall.

USA TODAY reached out to the Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages for comment on Oct. 22 and did not receive an immediate response.
