Ireland weather: ‘Uncertain’ week ahead as Storm Benjamin looms

Heavy rainfall is expected this week – while conditions remain “uncertain” going into next week according to weather experts, as Europe prepares for Storm Benjamin.

Ireland may not receive the brunt of the storm, but it could definitely receive the remnants of it. And Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has warned of heavy rainfall, particularly in the west.

He said: “Heavy rain has already arrived in parts of West and especially Southwest with more rain to come through the remainder of today and tonight before clearing Southeast Thursday morning. Over 30mm is possible in parts of West with less than 5mm likely for East coast.”

Next week remains a mystery, with warnings of stormy conditions – but Alan has warned against any “dramatic headlines” coming out about Halloween storms just yet. said: “Lots of uncertainty for next week with risk of some stormy weather towards of next week, but still a lot of uncertainty on track and timings.”

“So bear that in mind when you see dramatic headlines about any storm for Halloween. I’ll keep you updated.”

Today will start off rainy in Dublin, but it should become more mixed as the day goes on. However, it will be noticeably chillier today, with temperatures only getting up to around 11C, with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

Tonight will be mostly dry, with lows of 4C. And here is what Met Eireann’s latest forecast says for the rest of the week:

Overview: Mixed with rain or showers at times.

On Friday morning, showers will continue. They’ll gradually clear to the south in the afternoon with sunny spells following. More showers will move down from the north through the evening. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with moderate southwest winds becoming northerly.

Friday night will become mainly dry with clear spells. There will be some showers in western and northern coastal areas. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, stronger on western and northern coasts.

Saturday will start off mainly dry with sunny spells. Showers in the west and north will move down over much of the country, some heavy and a few possibly of hail. Highest temperatures off 8 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, stronger along some Atlantic coasts.

Saturday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells and lowest temperatures of 1 to 6 degrees, coldest in Leinster.

Sunday will start off mainly dry. Rain will develop in the west and north during the morning and will spread southeastwards through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with moderate westerly winds, freshening through the day.

There’ll be further outbreaks of rain on Sunday night , mainly in the south and west with lows of 6 to 8 degrees.

On Monday , outbreaks of rain in the west and south will gradually spread to all areas and clear later. A milder day with highs of 12 to 14 degrees and moderate to fresh westerly winds.
