Ruben Amorim insisted Manchester United’s focus is on this season following a question about Casemiro’s contract.

Casemiro’s deal at Old Trafford expires in June but United have a 12-month extension option.

Casemiro has regained his spot in the United starting XI this season, but he is the highest earner in the dressing room and will celebrate his 34th birthday in February.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham, Amorim was asked about Casemiro’s contract situation and he said: “Yeah, we don’t know what is going to happen. My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire, that he has the same problem. I don’t know what is going to happen.

“Let’s focus on this season. I’m really happy with Casemiro, he is really important. I’m really happy with Harry, but I know what you guys are asking, let’s focus on this season and then we’ll see the next season.”

Maguire’s contract also expires at the end of the season but United have already triggered the option to extend his deal.

Amorim recently said about Maguire: “We are really happy with Harry. It is not the time to talk about that again because that gives the idea that we are thinking so far away. We are really happy with Harry. He is a really important for us, but we need to focus on the next game.”

The United boss was asked whether he was pleased with Maguire’s performances and said: “Yes. I think it was good for him to play with the three centre-backs. I think he feels more comfortable.

“He doesn’t need to go to the side so much. Sometimes, you help some players with the way you play. Sometimes, it is the opposite with some players. I am really pleased. I think he is not young, but he can learn a lot. He can improve. I think he can be so much better with the ball because he has that quality.

“He needs to show that. Nowadays, with the set-pieces that you see, the amount of men that you put in the box, every cross from the opponent, everyone is playing the pass.

“He is a massive player for us, so I’m really happy, but he needs to continue and that game is in the past. The goal is in the past, let’s move into the future.”

Maguire was recalled to the starting team against Liverpool and Amorim explained his experience in big games and ability to deal with crosses was behind the decision.

The England international scored the matchwinner at Anfield, but he was absent against Brighton due to a knock and was named on the bench upon his return to the squad against Nottingham Forest.

Casemiro completed his first 90 minutes in the league this season at the City Ground.
