Tuesday’s EFL Cup & League One predictions
Having claimed the prized scalp of Manchester United before knocking out Championship crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, Grimsby will be hoping that the fun in the EFL Cup can continue when they welcome Brentford to Blundell Park.
Grimsby’s form has tailed off in recent weeks and Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Crewe was a third defeat in four games. But they remain League Two’s joint-highest scorers with 27 goals in 14 games and this fourth-round tie will have been the focus for some time.
It is hard to predict another sting in the tail against the Bees, who go into this fresh from Saturday’s 3-2 success at home to Liverpool, especially as manager Keith Andrews won’t want to let this opportunity pass him by having done the hard work with earlier-round wins over Bournemouth and Aston Villa.
Andrews fielded strong teams against both Premier League victims and, while they shouldn’t take their fourth-tier rivals for granted, both teams have scored in six of their last eight and the Mariners will be relying on their attacking abilities.
Fulham have suffered four defeats on the spin and that should ensure that manager Marco Silva takes few risks at Wycombe as he bids to boost morale with a place in the quarter-final.
However, the next-best bet from Tuesday’s schedule could come in League One as Bradford host playoff rivals Lincoln and a win for the Bantams will take them to the top of the table.
Valley Parade has proved to be a fortress for Bradford following last season’s promotion, and their first six home league games have yielded five victories and a draw.
That includes the scalps of Huddersfield, Luton and Wycombe and, with attacking talents Antoni Sarcevic and Stephen Humphrys both possible returners, they can maintain their home dominance.
The Imps have lost two of their last three league games 1-0 and in the latest of those at Leyton Orient on Saturday they managed only one shot on target.
