The Celeb Traitors’ Stephen Fry makes surprise admission after show ‘murder’

TELLY brainbox Stephen Fry has admitted being “unbelievably stupid” during his run on The Celebrity Traitors as he became the show’s latest victim.

The Cambridge-educated star, who boasts an IQ of 170 and is a member of Mensa, could not convince the players that he was a Faithful and lost his spot during the round table.

But Stephen was not the only loser in Claudia Winkleman’s BBC hit, which sees the Faithfuls attempting to root out the Traitors hiding among them, while avoiding murder.

Comedian Joe Wilkinson was slain by the Traitors, while Line of Duty actor Mark Bonnar lost out in a tense game of chance.

Stephen has now suggested he was not smart enough to save himself.

He said: “We fool ourselves, which is unbelievably stupid.

FRY’S FAIL

Stephen Fry ‘drops clue’ he knows more than what’s been shown on Celeb Traitors

“You have to accept the fact that human beings cannot read lies and that human beings are brilliant dissemblers and pretenders, and there’s no way of telling.

“It’s frustrating that the Traitors have done so well and there is no technique.

“If some people are accused at the round table, they sometimes go off into these complicated, ridiculous excuses as to why they are irrefutably a Faithful.

“When I was accused, I just laughed.” The former long-time host of BBC Two comedy quiz panel game QI, went on to take a swipe at players such as Kate Garraway, Alan Carr and Lucy Beaumont for playing the class clowns.

Bemoaning Tom Daley’s early murder, he went on: “When Tom was murdered, I couldn’t believe it.

“Tom was hyper-vigilant, and everyone noticed that.

“Perhaps he should have just maybe invented a daffy kind of persona for the sake of survival.”

Stephen was pitted against Jonathan Ross as the series big-hitters, with many convinced one of them was a Traitor.

But Jonathan, Alan Carr and Cat Burns have so far avoided detection as the bad guys.

Stephen added: “I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed what they’re enjoying now, the chuckling, cackling, glee of triumph.”

Meanwhile, viewers were on tenterhooks to see if Mark or telly historian David Olusoga would lose the game of chance after Wednesday’s round table ended in a tie.

Claudia presented them with two Chests of Chance with only one of them containing a life-saving shield.

David won, leaving Faithful Mark to say his goodbyes.

Speaking today, Mark said: “I would have played it slightly differently with hindsight.

“I perhaps shouldn’t have been quite so involved and quite so enthusiastic, wide-eyed and forthcoming with theories.

“Claudia said, ‘You know, remember, keep your eyes open at all times’, or something like that.

“I was certainly doing that in observing everyone, not sure I was subtle enough about that which possibly put a massive target on my back.”

Mark had already suggested his string of bad guy roles made him a marked man.

He added: “Having that round table decided by the Chest of Chance was very dramatic and emotional. I got so caught up in it all, but I hope it was a good TV moment.

KATE AIMS TO STARE OUT DEATH

By Felicity Cross

GOOD Morning Britain host Kate Garraway’s time on The Celebrity Traitors is hanging by a thread as she’s in line for a face-to-face murder.

The TV favourite has been branded weak and clueless by the other stars on the show.

She now faces the chopping block alongside comedians Lucy Beaumont and Nick Mohammed.

One of the trio will be slayed by Traitors Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr and Cat Burns next Wednesday.

Kate, right, said: “I want to see them face to face. If I’m being killed this is the best way to go. I’m pretty convinced it’s going to be me.”

In last night’s episode the doomed trio walked to a giant human chessboard to meet their fate. Celebs were earlier challenged to nominate their weakest link in an another chess match.

Choosing Kate, Jonathan said: “She’s physically weak, intellectually weak, just generally weak in every single way.”

“Even though I was sad to go, I thought, ‘Well, they’ve never done that before’.”

Joe, meanwhile, was taken out by the Traitors in their nightly murder.

But he joked that his only regret was not getting inside Ardross Castle’s famous turret, the home of the Traitors.

Joe, also known for acting roles in TV’s After Life and The Cockfields, laughed: “It was great. Only downside was I didn’t see the turret. I really wanted to see the turret.”

He added: “I wasn’t initially happy to be a Faithful because of not seeing the turret, but after an hour or so, I thought, sod all that lying stuff.

“We were making history as the worst set of Faithfuls.”

Elsewhere, Claudia rounded on the remaining celebrities and demanded they shaped up.

She implored them: “Faithfuls, you are breaking my heart, you are not getting it.

“What are you not seeing? You have to open your eyes, please, because there is no let up.

“Almost half of you have gone.

“Traitors, aren’t you having a brilliant game? Congratulations.”

Traitor Cat, meanwhile, has raised awareness of neurodivergence by speaking openly about how autism and ADHD affects her.

At the round table, Stephen suggested she could be a Traitor because of the later hours they have to keep.

He said: “It’s not proof but it’s an interesting area we’ve never discussed, which is the Traitors don’t get as much sleep as we do.

“Cat, you were sleeping in the window seat — you are not getting enough sleep.

“It’s an indication we haven’t even thought of, but it’s obviously true.”

Singer-songwriter Cat replied: “Just to explain, I do have autism and ADHD so when I’m around people a lot, it takes a lot more effort.

TOM’S WOOL PLUG

By Rod McPhee

THE BBC risked the wrath of broadcasting watchdogs when Tom Daley was seen plugging his wool brand on The Celebrity Traitor’s spin off, Uncloaked.

The Olympic diver was talking on the show on Wednesday night after being murdered, and was seen sitting in a chair with various knitting products behind him.

They included multiple rolls of wool from his brand, Made with Love, just over the left shoulder of Tom, 31, which were clearly in view on camera.

Rules expressly forbid the Beeb from promoting commercial products, though some celebrities have been known to cheekily flout the rules previously – and afterwards denied knowledge they were doing anything wrong.

COCKY ALAN’S LIE IS SPOTTED

TRAITOR Alan Carr is getting so cocky with his killing spree that he slipped up.

The comedian and presenter, 49, has played a blinder so far by acting the fool.

But at last night’s round table, ex-rugby ace Joe Marler spotted one of Alan’s lies after he faked his concern over being murdered — despite winning a shield that protected him.

Earlier, Alan boasted: “I have no faith in the Faithful. I am just bursting with confidence now.

“I wanted to get rid of Mark and I got rid of Mark, not a single bead of sweat.”
