The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department says a truck hauling monkeys from Tulane University overturned near the 117-mile marker north of Heidelberg on Tuesday, and several Rehsus monkeys are on the loose.
Sheriff Randy Johnson said there were 21 total monkeys on the truck and 6 are loose.
The monkeys weigh around 40 pounds and are aggressive to humans. They require PPE to handle. The monkeys carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.
Deputies are urging the public not to approach any monkeys they may see. If you see one, call 911 and report the location. The Sheriff’s Department said it is working to obtain additional information about any potential health concerns or dangers the animals could pose.
Tulane University has been notified and will send a team to pick up the monkeys tomorrow. They said if the monkeys leave the wreck site, they need to be shot.
Authorities are on scene and coordinating response efforts. More details will be released as they become available.
