Welsh Rugby to cut number of professional clubs to three

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is poised to cut the number of professional teams in the country from four to three.

The governing body had originally stated that its preferred option to secure the future of the game in Wales was to halve the number of teams, but after lengthy consultations it now appears that only one team will be cut and not until 2028.

That means there will continue to be four teams – Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets – for the next three seasons.

The WRU initiated the consultation process on the back of poor results at both domestic and international level.
