Several synagogue terrorism attack eyewitnesses ‘yet to come forward’ | ITV News

Counter Terrorism Police investigating the attack on a Manchester Synagogue say several eyewitnesses have yet to come forward with information.

Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz both died when terrorist Jihad Al Shamie carried out his attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Thursday, 2 October.

Three other men were left with serious injuries.

Greater Manchester Police say more than 50 people have given evidence to the investigation, but they are still searching for several witnesses who have yet to come forward with information.

Counter Terrorism Police are now looking to speak to an “elderly man who was walking with a young child”.

The elderly man was wearing a distinctive wide brimmed brown hat and was using a walking stick, police say.

There were also several vehicles which stopped at the scene and attempted to provide care to those injured in the attack.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts, who holds operational responsibility for Counter Terrorism Policing North West, said: “Our investigation into the terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue is continuing and, so far, over 50 witnesses have been interviewed as part of the investigation.

“We are incredibly grateful for the public’s support, however we know from CCTV footage taken of the incident that there are still several eyewitnesses who remain unidentified.

“This includes an elderly man and a young child, as well as motorists who stopped at the scene to provide care to those who were injured.

“Nobody should ever see what those people saw. They have witnessed an unimaginably traumatic event and could potentially be struggling with processing the scenes that confronted them that day.

“That is why, in addition to assisting with our investigation, we are keen to identify and speak to anyone who was present at the time of the incident or the immediate aftermath so that we can ensure they have access to all the welfare support options that are available to witnesses.

“It is also incredibly important that all witnesses are identified as part of our support for the coronial investigation.”

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, rang 999 during his deadly rampage, pledging allegiance to the so-called Islamic State terror group.

He drove his car at Jews gathering for the holy day of Yom Kippur then attacked others with a knife and tried to storm the synagogue, wearing a fake suicide belt, before being shot dead by armed police.

Adrian Daulby is believed to have been inadvertently shot by armed police as they scrambled to stop the carnage.

The inquests into the deaths of both victims are scheduled to be opened at Manchester Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, October 29.

The King earlier this week visited the synagogue to speak to survivors of the attack and deliver his sympathies in person to the congregation.

The inquest opening into the death of Syrian-born Al-Shamie, granted UK citizenship in 2006, is listed for Friday, October 31 at the same court.
