Disney+ now streaming in HDR10+

Starting with Hulu titles and soon expanding to Disney content, Disney+ now offers movies and series in HDR10+ format, alongside HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

This long-awaited feature follows Disney’s announcement in January.

This week, Disney+ has begun offering select titles in HDR10+ with expanded color and dynamic range. Unlike base HDR10, HDR10+ supports dynamic metadata on a scene-by-scene basis – just like Dolby Vision – for improved picture quality, especially on mid-range TVs with limited HDR capabilities.

1000 Hulu titles in HDR10+

At launch, Disney+ will offer HDR10+ exclusively on Hulu content, with over 1000 titles available. The company confirmed that HDR10+ support will later expand to Disney+ content and more Hulu titles.

Disney+ will continue to offer its movies and series in HDR10 and Dolby Vision. A Disney+ Premium plan is required to enjoy content in HDR (also 4K and Dolby Atmos).

Exclusive to Samsung TVs

At launch, Disney’s HDR10+ support is exclusive to Samsung TVs. it is compatible with 2018 LCD and OLED models onward and select Samsung Smart monitors. Make sure to update the Disney+ app.

Previously, all Samsung TVs were served Disney+ content in base HDR10. Amazon, Apple and Netflix have also added HDR10+ support.

Given Samsung’s role in the development of HDR10+ and the company’s strategy not to support Dolby Vision, this partnership is not hugely surprising.

– “We are delighted to introduce this technology onto Disney+ and remain committed to collaborating with various partners to broaden HDR10+ support across our product range and the wider streaming landscape,” said Inbeom Kim, VP of Visual Display at Samsung.

It is, however, unfortunate that owners of other TVs or streaming devices, such as Apple TV 4K and Amazon Fire TV, cannot yet enjoy HDR10+. Disney has not announced a timeline for broader availability, though the Apple tvOS app already indicates HDR10+ availability on Disney+.
