DC area braces for rain, wind Thursday from strong weather-maker

The next weather-maker will bring wet and windy weather to the D.C. area on Thursday morning.

You can expect a slow morning rush hour as heavy rain may reduce visibility and roads will be wet. Scattered light showers begin Wednesday afternoon, eventually picking up in intensity overnight into Thursday.

The First Alert Weather Team will be on a STORM ALERT for Thursday morning due to gusty winds, heavy rainfall and some thunder.

Temperatures will be warm and muggy Thursday morning in the 60s. By the late morning, some energy may become available for a few thunderstorms and isolated strong wind gusts. The best opportunity for this will be east of I-95.

The Storm Prediction Center has a low risk for damaging wind gusts east of the D.C. area.

Beneficial rainfall is on the way for the area as drought conditions should improve by the weekend. Forecast models continue to suggest one to two inches of rainfall by Thursday afternoon.

Flash flooding is not expected due to the drought, but localized flooding is possible in low-lying spots due to excessive rainfall. Coastal flooding is also expected at high tide along the Potomac River.

Moderate river flooding is expected in Alexandria, Va. and at Severn River in Annapolis, Md.

Rain should end Thursday afternoon, and southwest breezes will pick up for the rest of the day. Clouds will decrease quickly allowing for some sunshine before sunset.

There will be northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph and below-average temperatures in the low 60s on Halloween. Expect dry weather for trick-or-treating with chilly temperatures in the low 50s.
