Preston vs Sheffield United preview

Preston have suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time this season, but are still playing some decent football and can share the points with Sheffield United, who are just a point above the drop zone.

There is a fine line between success and failure in the Championship and Preston have been on the wrong end of a couple of tight defeats over the last week.

They were beaten 2-1 at West Brom last Saturday despite going toe-to-toe with their promotion-chasing hosts, and succumbed to a harsh 1-0 midweek loss to Birmingham, who were outshot 17 to nine.

Those defeats have dropped Preston down from fourth to 11th place but they can still be reasonably satisfied with their progress.

Preston have taken 11 points from six home fixtures, including eye-catching victories at home to Leicester and Ipswich  plus a 2-2 draw with highflying Middlesbrough.

And they should have some key players refreshed and ready to make an impact after influential wingback Thierry Small and forwards Milutin Osmajic and Lewis Dobbin were benched for the midweek match.

Sheffield United are also likely to make a few changes but one of them will be enforced after attacker Gus Hamer injured his knee in the 3-1 defeat at Blackburn.

The south Yorkshire side are hoping for the best with regards to Hamer’s injury, but they will sorely miss the 28-year-old.

Chris Wilder will ask others to step up, including Callum O’Hare, who has shown signs of getting closer to his best, but the Blades boss will not take anything for granted with his team positioned just outside the drop zone and nine points adrift of the playoffs.

Getting closer to the top end could be a long process and there are sure to be some setbacks along the way.

United needed a second-half fightback to atone for a poor opening 45 minutes in their midweek success at Blackburn.

They could easily have come unstuck at Ewood Park and may have to accept a point on their swift return to Lancashire.

Peck could pick up a card

Sydie Peck is a key cog in the Sheffield United midfield because he provides so much energy. The combative 21-year-old have received four yellow cards and may struggle to avoid a fifth, which would trigger a one-game suspension.

Lilywhites can stop the rot

Sheffield United have not drawn any of their 11 Championship games this season but eight of them have been settled by one-goal margins. They could be sucked into a close contest by Preston, who are going through a sticky patch and may be reasonably content with a single point.

Milutin Osmajic to score any time

The Montengrin striker should be fresh after his limited midweek minutes and he can make his mark.

Tyrese Campbell to commit two or more fouls

Campbell is second on the Sheffield United foul count with 14 and is likely to attract the referee’s attention at Deepdale.

Under four goals

Seven of Sheffield United’s games have featured just a single goal. They won 3-1 at Blackburn on Tuesday but their next visit to Lancashire is likely to be a tighter affair.
