Bayern vs Olympiacos Preview
Bayern lost to Fenerbahce 88-73 in the last EuroLeague round and now stands at 2-3. The first impression clearly shows that Gordon Herbert’s team doesn’t have nearly the same potential as last season’s roster. And that’s no surprise. During the summer, they lost Carsen Edwards, who was part of the EuroLeague’s First Team, and Nick Weiler-Babb, who won the Best Defender award. Just those two departures are enough to strip a team of its engines on both ends of the floor, with no real way to replace them properly—especially since Bayern’s basketball department doesn’t have the financial resources of many other EuroLeague clubs. After all, it wasn’t a super-rich team that stole Edwards from them, but Virtus Bologna.
At first glance, it seemed like Xavier Rathan-Mayes might step into Edwards’ shoes, but he has played well in only one of five games so far. Andreas Obst has been Bayern’s main scoring source for now, which in itself isn’t the best news. Not because Obst is a poor player, but because he’s a pure shooter and not designed to be a primary ball handler. Yet that’s the role he’s been forced into due to a lack of alternatives. Stefan Jovic missed last week’s game due to a minor injury, which only increased Obst’s responsibilities on offense. Kamar Baldwin hasn’t impressed yet, while captain Vladimir Lucic has been very inconsistent. Bayern hasn’t gotten much from Wenyen Gabriel either, even though he was supposed to replace Devin Booker. Overall, what Bayern has shown so far suggests they’ll be closer to the bottom of the standings than the play-in or playoff spots this season.
Olympiacos, on the other hand, produced one of the biggest comebacks of the EuroLeague season so far in Round 5. They trailed by double digits with just over two minutes left against Maccabi Tel Aviv, yet somehow won 95-94. That victory brought them to 3-2, and they can be more than satisfied with that record given all the circumstances. The Greek champions have neither looked great on the floor nor had a full roster available. At one point, almost their entire backcourt was out, forcing them to pay Partizan a buyout for Frank Ntilikina. Saben Lee clearly isn’t a player who can consistently make a difference, and Tyler Dorsey is more of a scorer than a creator. Still, those backcourt issues are easier to overcome when you have Sasha Vezenkov and Nikola Milutinov—two of the most dominant players at their positions in the EuroLeague.
The good news before the trip to Germany is the return of Evan Fournier, who missed the double-round week. He’s the second-most important player in Georgios Bartzokas’ system after Vezenkov, and many were surprised by how seamlessly the French guard has adapted to the coach’s philosophy. Both have fiery personalities, but they share the same win-at-all-costs mentality, and that seems to connect them. Shaq McKissic will also make his season debut this week, which should further ease Bartzokas’ rotation planning. There’s no doubt this team still has plenty of room for improvement—it’s just a matter of how long it will take them to reach their peak form. Because once they do, they’re capable of dominating for months, as they did during the regular season last year.
