Northampton Saints have knocked early pacesetters Bath off the top of the Premiership table but they look set to face a tough challenge at home to second-placed Saracens.
It looked like being a shaky start for the Saints as they threw away a 33-7 lead to draw 33-33 at home with Exeter in their opening match, then nearly repeated the trick a week later at Gloucester, where they were 31-7 up at the break and ended up winning 37-35.
Wins over Leicester and Newcastle followed and Saints have picked up a try bonus point in every match, but they come up against the one team who have outscored them over the first four rounds.
Sarries’ one slip this season came at Harlequins, who utilised a smart kicking game to outfox their London rivals. But Northampton are likely to stick with their extensive running game and Saracens look to have the answers to that.
Saracens bounced back with a ten-try demolition of Sale last week, five of them scored by teenage winger Noah Caluori, and they have the weapons to threaten a Northampton defence who have shipped 15 tries this term.
The visitors should also have the answers up front as Sarries’ powerful pack can hold their own against a Northampton unit fired by huge South African lock JJ Van Der Mescht.
Northampton have won their last three home Premiership encounters with Saracens but last season’s meeting went to the wire as the Saints came back from 24-7 down to edge it thanks to a penalty try ten minutes from the end and a winning score with the clock in the red.
A tight contest is expected and the handicap has been set at just three points so Sarries look the value at odds-against to end the hosts’ winning run.
