Toronto Blue Jays have handshake agreement on extension with Schneider and key front-office member: report

A strong 2025 season has helped ensure two key members of the Toronto Blue Jays organization will be sticking around.

After a rough go in 2024, there was plenty of chatter that not only manager John Schneider, but GM Ross Atkins and team president Mark Shapiro were all on the hot seat heading into the 2025 season. A 94-68 record, paired with the organization’s first World Series appearance since 1993, has changed their future drastically.

Schneider, who was named as the Blue Jays’ permanent manager in October of 2022, is currently in the final year of his contract. The same goes for Shapiro, who has served as the Blue Jays president since 2015.

Public opinion has changed in a big way on both due to a successful 2025 season. Thanks to the outstanding year, it sounds as though both will be signed to contract extensions shortly after the World Series wraps up.

“A couple of [questions] in Shapiro and Schneider may already be unofficially settled, with extensions that will be finalized soon after the off-season begins,” Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi wrote in a recent column when discussing what questions the Blue Jays will face entering the 2026 season.

Under Shapiro’s guidance, the Blue Jays have made the playoffs on five occasions. They were able to advance to the ALCS in 2016, but were eliminated in five games by Cleveland. They played in the AL wild-card series in 2020, 2022, and 2023, but were swept on all three occasions.

As for Schneider, he tied Cito Gaston as the fastest manager to reach 100 wins with the Blue Jays during the 2023 season, and ranks fourth in franchise history with 303 victories. Despite some controversial decisions throughout his tenure, he’s got this current Blue Jays team playing better than anybody had envisioned entering the 2025 campaign.

As for Atkins, who has also taken his fair share of flak in the past, he has one additional season remaining on his contract. Based on the Blue Jays’ success this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see an extension offered his way once his deal is nearing its end.
