With all three stumps to aim at the non-striker’s end and the batter way behind, Shubman Gill failed to make a direct hit.

India captain Shubman Gill missed out on a golden chance to get rid of in-form Australia batter Matt Short cheaply during the second ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. Short was yet to open his account when a mix-up with captain Mitchell Marsh saw him making a desperate dive at the non-striker’s end to save himself from being run out.
Midway through the fourth over of Mohammed Siraj, innings’ ninth, Short, who had just walked in following the dismissal of opener Travis Head, tried getting off the mark following a misfield at short cover.
Short was keen on taking advantage of the misfield, but Marsh thought otherwise as the ball rolled in towards mid-off from where Gill took off and collected the ball before taking his sweet time for a direct hit at the non-striker’s end.
Meanwhile, Marsh subsequently agreed and Short was running for his life, making a desperate dive while Gill made the throw and missed the stumps.
“Should have been out, Gill took too much time there,” said Mark Waugh, who was on commentary duties.
Meanwhile, Short was left in pain as he ended up dragging his right hand through the turf. It was the same hand that was left bloodied after he attempted to take a catch during the second ODI in Adelaide.
India’s fielding has been below par so far on the tour. Their fielders have dropped as many as four catches in the first two matches, including three in the second match which they lost by two wickets.
The Gill-led India have already lost the three-match series after losing the first two matches. They are hoping for a consolation win in Sydney and made two changes to their playing XI, bringing in Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.
