Ipswich vs West Brom preview

No one said the Championship was an easy school to figure out and Ipswich over the past week are the ultimate proof of that.

There was certainly no disgrace in losing 2-1 at Middlesbrough last week, a sad end to a five-match unbeaten run for the Tractor Boys in which Suffolk’s finest had been starting to flex their muscles.

The sense was that Boro are in the promotion ride for a reason so Ipswich would just have to dust themselves down and take out their ire on upstarts Charlton. Or that was the theory.

Clearly Charlton hadn’t read the script, bowled up at Portman Road as big outsiders only to make a mockery of those odds by romping to a 3-0 win.

“Unacceptable” was boss Kieran McKenna’s verdict, cautioning that things go “far south very quickly” when everything’s not in their favour.

That has to be a worry ahead of a visit from West Brom, a club with a more than decent away record having won half of their road trips, at Wrexham, Stoke and Norwich.

They did lose 2-1 at Watford on Wednesday to halt them in their tracks and they are inconsistent – their four-match form reads WLWL.

But maybe that makes them all the more attractive when at decent odds.

They will be up against it at Portman Road because Ipswich create chances – they average 17 shots per game, only Coventry average more. Town have scored 13 times on home soil, the same number as leaders Coventry.

But there is a soft spot with Ipswich, who have managed just two clean sheets in 11 in all competitions and shipping three at home to Charlton – no matter how impressive the Addicks have been thus far – is seriously poor.

Mepham to put the boot in

Chris Mepham will be a key man at the heart of the Baggies’ defence with waves of Ipswich attacks crashing down. He has registered two and three tackles in West Brom’s two games this week and can put in at least another two at Portman Road.

McKenna to change Town behaviour

Ipswich are the division’s good boys with just 14 yellows so far – and Kieran McKenna is demanding they show their teeth. They were out-tackled, out-fouled and out-carded by Charlton so expect a response in a game that ought to be feisty given the stakes.

Isaac Price to have two or more shots

Five-goal Price is averaging 2.5 shots per game for the Baggies in a No.10 role where he is loving the freedom.

Ipswich most corners in each half

West Brom’s games don’t see many corners and Ipswich, sure to be on the front foot, can win plenty more of them.

West Brom goalkeeper to make three or more saves

Ipswich are averaging 4.7 shots on target so don’t be surprised if Josh Griffiths isn’t kept busy in the West Brom goal.
