Why Canadiens Prospect Alexander Zharovsky’s KHL Situation Isn’t What Fans Think

With the start of the KHL season over the past few weeks, Montreal Canadiens fans have been closely following the situation of Alexander Zharovsky in Russia.
Quickly, many (myself included) thought we were seeing the same scenario repeat itself as with Ivan Demidov last year, when SKA’s organization reduced his ice time despite his obvious talent.
But according to Marco D’Amico, guest on the Commission Athlétique podcast, the two cases are completely different.
The situations of Ivan Demidov and Alexander Zharovsky are very different, according to D’Amico
No panic!
Alexander Zharovsky’s playing time situation is far from resembling that of Ivan Demidov last year in the KHL.
Consequences for poor performance are normal in a league like the KHL. He played almost 16 minutes in the next game! said D’Amico
The analyst explained that in Demidov’s case, there was a significant political aspect to manage – particularly because of the Montreal Canadiens’ interest and the control exercised by his Russian club.
“There was politics involved with Demidov, especially because the Canadiens were in the picture. In Zharovsky’s case, his team, Ufa, hasn’t had any political discussions with Montreal. The Canadiens are letting them do their thing. Nick Bobrov checks in from time to time, but he’s letting the kid be.” – Marco D’Amico
D’Amico also reminded everyone of a very important point that many often forget – the KHL is not a development league.
“You have to understand that the KHL isn’t a development league. Coaches there want to win.” – D’Amico
The good news is that despite the ups and downs, Zharovsky continues to impress in the offensive zone.
In nine games, he’s already recorded eight points, including three goals – and that’s with more limited ice time.
At least Zharovsky seems to be in a more stable environment than Demidov was last year, with no tension between his club and the Canadiens. In my opinion, that’s wonderful news.
I think this quieter approach from the Canadiens is the right one.
Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts Podcast:
“There isn’t anyone I know, including Jason Bakula, who doesn’t think that Alexander Zharovsky won’t be a big hit for Montreal; and they got him in the 2nd round.”

Letting the young player find his own path without outside pressure could very well be the key to maximizing his development.
