Iowa football schedule unveils two future nonconference opponents

College football scheduling never rests. As contracts are negotiated and schedules are planned years in advance, there are always tweaks and future opponents getting lined up.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have started to put together their future schedules through the remaining years in the 2020s and have announced two more nonconference opponents that they have added to the schedule, one being an in-state foe.
Per Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register, the Iowa Hawkeyes have locked in a second game with the University of Northern Iowa on September 1, 2029, after already having them on the schedule next year in 2026. Iowa also has scheduled North Dakota for a matchup on September 18, 2027.
Iowa has played in-state foe Northern Iowa seven times in its history and holds a 7-0 record against the Panthers. The last meeting came in 2018, which saw Iowa win handily by a score of 38-14. Northern Iowa has come close to taking down Iowa, twice losing by one score. The Panthers lost 31-23 in 2014 and 17-16 in 2009.
Iowa’s 2026 and 2027 nonconference schedules have been filled. The 2026 slate will see Iowa open with three home games in a row against Northern Illinois, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa. The 2027 nonconference slate features an opener at home against Ball State, a road trip to Iowa State, and back home to take on North Dakota.
