College football Week 9: Schedule, top 25 rankings, preview

The early window had plenty of action, an overtime finish and a ranked upset. As the afternoon games kick off, let’s take a look back at the best games from the noon slate.

Memphis rallies to upset No. 18 South Florida

Memphis stormed back in the fourth quarter to upset No. 18 South Florida, 34-31. In a game that had major playoff implications for both teams, Memphis pulls off an improbable comeback win to knock off the Bulls and open up a path to the CFP.

The Tigers scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, taking the lead with 1:07 to go in regulation. South Florida is no stranger to game-winning field goals, though, as the Bulls drove down the field, to give Nico Gramatica a chance to kick another game winner. An untimely holding penalty with seconds to go pushed the field-goal attempt back to 52 yards, which Gramatica hooked to the left, giving Memphis the win at home.

Memphis WR Cortez Braham Jr. had seven receptions for 75 yards and two receiving touchdowns, including the game-winner on an incredible catch in the end zone:

WHAT A CATCH TO TAKE THE LEAD 😱

No. 16 Virginia survives a road upset bid by UNC

No. 16 Virginia survives a nailbiter against UNC, winning 17-16 in overtime. It’s the Cavaliers’ third overtime win in their last four games after taking down No. 8 Florida State and Louisville earlier in the season.

It was a low-scoring affair, deadlocked at 10 at the half and remaining that way until the end of regulation. Virginia got the ball first in overtime, and the Cavaliers converted with a direct snap to RB J’Mari Taylor, who ran it in for the lead. UNC responded on its possession with a nine-yard TD pass, and the Tarheels decided the game would end on the next play, going for two to try to pull off the upset. But the diving attempt at the goal line was stopped just short, and No. 16 Virginia escaped Chapel Hill with a win.

Georgia Tech rolls Syracuse for best start since 1966

Georgia Tech rolls over Syracuse at home, 41-16, to remain undefeated on the season. The last time the Yellow Jackets started 8-0 was in 1966, when their head coach was the legendary Bobby Dodd. It’s also the first 5-0 start in ACC play in Georgia Tech program history.

Haynes King went 25/31 for 304 passing yards and three TDs through the air, while adding two rushing TDs in another impressive showing from Georgia Tech’s senior QB.

No. 8 Ole Miss takes down No. 13 Oklahoma

Ole Miss picks up a huge road win over No. 13 Oklahoma, 34-26. The Rebels bounce back after a hard-fought loss at Georgia last week, taking down the Sooners in a top-15 SEC matchup.

It was a back-and-forth affair all afternoon, with the teams trading field goals to start the second half. Oklahoma stormed back in the third quarter to take its first lead of the game with back-to-back touchdowns from RB Xavier Robinson, including a 65-yarder.

But Ole Miss wouldn’t go away, retaking the lead with a touchdown early in the fourth. The missed two-point conversion kept it a five-point game, but the Rebels added another field goal to go ahead by eight with four minutes to go. The Sooners tried to tie it with a late drive, but the Rebel defense held strong to pick up the win. For Ole Miss, it’s the first road win against a ranked SEC team in the Lane Kiffin era (previously 0-6).
