Instant reactions to Alabama’s comeback road win at South Carolina

On Saturday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide traveled to Columbia for a challenging road SEC matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
A back-and-forth contest that included many ups-and-downs, it was Alabama who eventually came away victorious in Columbia though, defeating the Gamecocks by a final score of 29-22 due to a massive fourth quarter comeback.
In the win, Alabama fell behind in the fourth quarter, even trailing by eight at one point. The Crimson Tide however responded with a touchdown drive, as well as a two-point conversion, and then put the game away following what was a massive turnover in prime field position late.
Following are some instant reactions to Alabama’s win against South Carolina on Saturday afternoon in Columbia.
Deontae Lawson with play of the game
There were few plays in this game more impactful than Deontae Lawson’s forced fumble of LaNorris Sellers late in the fourth quarter. This gave Alabama the ball at the 37-yard line with a little under two minutes remaining, and if this play did not happen, there is no telling how the game would have ended.
Alabama struggles to run the ball again
The Alabama offense has struggled to run the ball at times this season, and the same occurred once again Saturday in Columbia. Alabama ran for only 72 yards total, a vast majority of which came at the end of the game.
Blake Doud big for Crimson Tide
Something that might not get as much attention following this win, but absolutely should, was the performance of Alabama punter Blake Doud. Doud did an outstanding job of flipping the field Saturday, averaging 55.4 yards per punt across his five punts, three of which were downed inside the 20-yard line.
Alabama survives another road test
This game could have played out in a different fashion that would have seen Alabama with two bad losses to current unranked teams. However, the Crimson Tide now enter the bye week still undefeated in SEC play, and have survived another challenging road test, building to their impressive resume.
