When: Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025.

Time: 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

The matchup today is about more than bragging rights—it’s a battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy, a four-foot wooden statue introduced in 1953 when Michigan State joined the Big Ten. Michigan leads the all-time series 74–38–5 and has won the last three meetings. The game has been played annually since 1945 and remains one of the Big Ten’s protected rivalries.

Michigan enters the matchup fresh off a 24-7 win over Washington last week, bouncing back from a tough loss at USC. The Wolverines leaned on a strong defensive effort, forcing three interceptions and two sacks, while freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jordan Marshall added 133 rushing yards and a score, filling in for injured star Justice Haynes.

Michigan State, meanwhile, continued its Big Ten struggles, falling 38-13 at No. 3 Indiana in its last game. The Spartans allowed 332 passing yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Aidan Chiles managed just 93 passing yards on 10 of 12 attempts. MSU’s lone touchdown came late, and the defense surrendered 38 points for the second straight week.

The Wolverines enter at 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the Big Ten, ranked No. 25 in the AP poll. After a midseason stumble against USC, Michigan regained momentum with last week’s win over Washington.

Offensively, they average 417.9 yards per game, powered by a balanced attack: 212 rushing yards and 205 passing yards per game. Defensively, Michigan allows just 17 points per game, which is 17th in the nation.

A notable stat: Michigan’s defense has held opponents to 307.9 total yards per game, ranked 24th in the country.

True freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood has thrown for 1,440 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions with a 62.4% completion rate, while adding 202 rushing yards and three scores.

Justice Haynes, despite missing last week, leads the team with 705 rushing yards, which ranks 10th in the country and eight TDs, gaining 7.4 yards per carry. Donaven McCulley is Michigan’s top receiver with 24 catches for 369 yards and two TDs.
