7 Best Moments From SEVENTEEN’s Return to BMO Stadium in LA: Surprise Talents, ‘Aju Nice’ & More

Less than a year after making its U.S. stadium debut at the same venue, SEVENTEEN returned to L.A. for the group’s entirely “NEW_” world tour.
This time, the BMO Stadium run on Thursday (Oct. 16) and Friday (Oct. 17) nights was lighter two additional members, with Hoshi, Woozi and Wonwoo joining Jeonghan in completing their mandatory South Korean military service; Jun, who sat out the previous tour to support his acting career, meanwhile, took the stage once again after nearly three long years away from the city.
Even though the chaos was slightly more controlled with fewer faces — the improvised banter certainly felt shorter — the guys of SEVENTEEN are never ones to simply follow a script. As such, there were far too many surprises to count: “I think, at this rate, we’re not going to be able to perform the songs we did prepare,” Seungkwan quipped following one timeout from their real setlist to take fan requests. (To think, there was a world where DK’s casually perfect high notes in “Rock,” formally cut from the U.S. leg of the tour, went unheard.)
Elsewhere, the K-pop superstars delivered showstopping solo talents with almost every track from HAPPY BURSTDAY, the release that celebrated the group’s tenth anniversary in May. While that was generally quite new (hence, this outing’s name), one major thing remained unchanged: SEVENTEEN’S singular domination of the stage, whether solo, abridged or all together.
Until SEVENTEEN next graces Los Angeles with its presence, here are the seven best moments from the ever-entertaining boy band’s spectacular two nights at BMO Stadium.

}The one big change on this tour? SEVENTEEN forgoes its usual unit stages, instead showcasing nine solo songs from the latest full-length project. Still, the members’ respective skill sets played into each other quite nicely: following the smooth precision of Dino’s “Trigger,” the dance protégé theatrically handed the reins to fellow Performance Unit member Jun for his equally mesmerizing “Gemini.” Likewise, Joshua and DK’s consecutive stages of “Fortunate Change” and “Happy Virus” both channeled a sweet earnestness typical of the Vocal Unit.

}Because it’s been a while since they all took solos on the road — seven years, to be exact — the group’s members had ample time to work out their identities as performers and discover new skills along the way. Woozi might be the resident virtuoso, but in his absence, a few of the other members picked up instruments: Vernon strummed his (dad’s) guitar for ’00s pop-rock throwback “Shining Star,” while Seungkwan accompanied the emotional outpouring of his beautiful ballad “Raindrops” by playing the piano. (DK, too, got a rocking drum solo later on.)

}Midway through the concerts, BMO hit the Blitz club. The 8’s dreamy “Skyfall” turned the stadium show into an EDM festival; Mingyu flaunted his supermodel strut to the gritty “Shake It Off,” well suited for a warehouse rave; aggressive, animalistic and bass-heavy “Jungle” made a compelling case for S.Coups’ status as leader of the pack. The trio set a vibe that kept rolling deeper into the night — at one point, SVT mascot Bongbongee dialed up the volume with a DJ set of fan favorites, which Dino then riffed on for a silly encore bit.

}Even with a larger roster than most, the group’s enlisted members were dearly missed. In place of Hoshi’s bottomless energy, the crowd embraced his role as moodmaker, barking at S.Coups in various states of undress and acting as The 8’s personal hype men during a dance break. Four friends, clad in camo, even hilariously came equipped with egg-like cut-outs of Jeonghan, Wonwoo, Hoshi and Woozi’s heads (military buzz cuts and all), clinching a shout out from those present on stage: “13 of us are all here!”

}To fill any gaps, the abbreviated crew put in overtime. A glowing testament to their teamwork and stamina, the guys covered extra parts on potent inclusions like “HOT,” “Rock with you” and “HIT,” a pulsating banger so intense that it entails an explicit breather built into its bridge. These changes may have been more or less expected, but a bonus twist was the cherry on top: “HIGHLIGHT,” originally a unit track, became an explosive extravaganza for all nine to share.

}If you made a Bingo card for any of the band’s setlists, trademark anthem “VERY NICE” (aka “Aju Nice”) could easily occupy the free space. That’s why the guys’ feigned goodbyes caused such an uproar: as the curtain fell for the first time, SVT had yet to utter a single note of the classic finale song, cluing fans into the fact that the show wasn’t really over. After returning, “Aju Nice” didn’t go on for quite the same “never-ending” stretch as in the past; still, the guys delivered on the moment, prancing around to collect Sanrio dolls and goofy hats, all while making those in the audience briefly the shining center of attention.

}If Los Angeles was happy to see SVT, the feeling was certainly mutual. “I think you guys already know, I love L.A.,” said Mingyu, who recently filmed CxM’s “5, 4, 3 (Pretty woman)” music video in the city. Baseball fan DK relayed the news that his team was heading to the World Series, yelling “Let’s go, Dodgers!” with an excited fist pump. Meanwhile, native Angelino Joshua expressed sadness that some of his go-to spots from years ago had since disappeared. “But the only thing that didn’t change is you guys,” he added, smiling. “Thank you so much for that.”
In that vein, the singer had one last request: As his bandmate The 8 explained earlier in the show, the trek’s title recalls an old tradition of the group’s: with every studio album released, SEVENTEEN refreshes its set of matching rings. Holding out his newly adorned pinky, Joshua made a wish: “Not all of my members are here today, but hopefully the next time we come to L.A., we’ll have all 13 of us,” he said. “Can you promise me that next time, you’ll all come?” Ask anyone still riding the high of those two days; that shouldn’t be a hard promise to keep.
