Smallville Art Gives Tom Welling's DC Hero The Superman Suit He Should Have Had In Arrowverse's Crisis

As of December 2025, it will have been more than half a decade since Tom Welling reprised his version of Superman from Smallville in the DC TV crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Though his Clark Kent from Earth-167 was revealed to have given up his abilities while living a happily married life as a husband and father, many have debated if the Man of Steel’s powers were truly gone.

To show an alternative take on Welling’s Arrowverse cameo, Matias Streb made artwork demonstrating the Man of Tomorrow removing his clock, unveiling that it was Blue Kryptonite that stripped him of his powers. The artpiece sees Clark ripping off his shirt to suit up as the DC icon, before flying off, presumably to help join the Arrowverse heroes with the multiverse crisis.

The theory has gained traction over the years that Clark’s clock had a piece of Blue Kryptonite inside it, as there were many who noted that there was a blue background noticeable on it. While Earth-167 was destroyed during the Crisis, it was confirmed to have been restored in the new multiverse created by Oliver Queen as the Spectre.

Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane in Smallville from season 4 all the way up until season 10, also reprised her role in the crossover. She had also already joined the Arrowverse franchise at that point, as she played Alura Zor-El in the Supergirl TV show, starting in season 3 when she replaced Laura Benanti.

The Smallville leads appeared in the second hour of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which was Batwoman season 1, episode 9, and aired on December 9, 2019. This was the last traditional Arrowverse event before the COVID-19 pandemic, as restrictions made it difficult for the CW productions before the franchise ended in 2024.

When speaking to ScreenRant in November 2024, Welling expressed that he would love to reprise the role, and properly suit up as Smallville’s Superman. The DC veteran shared, “One of the reasons I think I had been resistant to it [was] because of my own hang-ups. But now that I have two little boys, I think it’d be cool because they already call me that, which is cool. “

A Smallville animated show has been in development from Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum, who starred in the first seven seasons of The WB/The CW drama, for the last few years. The idea is to continue after how the series ended in 2011, with the goal of bringing back the original actors to voice their characters.

However, the project has not been formally greenlit, in light of James Gunn’s DC Universe currently being the primary focus for DC Studios. Smallville is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and through home media release.
