Top CFMEU official sacked over ‘accepting bribes’

A leading CFMEU figure recently promoted to clean up the embattled construction union has been sacked following allegations he was involved in a range of suspected corrupt dealings.

What we know:

  • John Perkovic faces allegations that he obtained a range of undisclosed benefits from construction companies he was meant to oversee as a senior union official (SMH).

  • CFMEU administrator Mark Irving announced Perkovic’s dismissal on Thursday, adding that the companies allegedly providing the benefits had been referred to Victoria Police (The Australian).

  • Irving said he had compelling evidence, including work emails, confirming the alleged conduct and admissions from Perkovic.

  • CFMEU national secretary Zach Smith promoted Perkovic in July to the Victorian branch’s second-most-senior position overseeing most of the organisers in the industry (AFR).

  • Irving provided details of Perkovic’s dismissal in a text message to more than 500 CFMEU members: “Mr Perkovic was given the opportunity to respond and has not been able to provide any acceptable explanation.”
