Search begins for engineering partner to reboot multi-billion-pound Euston station rebuild

The redevelopment of Euston station and the surrounding area could restart in a few years’ time, with a tender contract having just gone out for a design and engineering partner to develop the plans for the site.

First signalled in June’s UK-wide infrastructure strategy, a new Euston Delivery Company (EDC) was being set up to deliver the Euston station rebuild as well as the oversite development that will help pay for it.

The long-term vision includes thousands of new homes, new office space and major public-realm improvements in and around Euston. The intention is to create a single, joined-up interchange serving National Rail, HS2, London Underground and local connections through buses and taxi services.

Earlier this year, the government, indirectly through the Crown Estate, took a 50% stake in the future redevelopment of the estate by forming a joint venture with the project lead, Lendlease.

While EDC will oversee the programme, delivery of the new HS2 station is expected to be carried out through a separate Private Finance Partner. Market engagement for that contract will take place later.

A search for an Engineering and Design Partner

The Euston Delivery Company (EDC) has now begun the process of appointing an Engineering and Design Partner, which will lead much of the technical design and coordination work for the multi-billion-pound scheme. The partner will be expected to take on a lead-designer role across the entire campus, spanning high-speed rail infrastructure, upgrades to the existing mainline concourse, Underground interchange works and integration with future commercial development.

The initial contract is expected to run for five years, with options to extend into later stages of detailed design and construction.

The tender contract is worth up to £300 million.

In the meantime, enabling works are still continuing around the station to prepare it for the day when the full go-ahead is given to build the station.
