Arsenal vs Crystal Palace preview

Balancing the demands of Premier League and European football is a new challenge for Crystal Palace, who lost 1-0 at home to 16-1 outsiders AEK Larnaca in the Conference League on Thursday.

Three days later, the Eagles face a testing trip to title favourites Arsenal, who continued their perfect start to the Champions League campaign with Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Mikel Arteta’s men have won their first three European fixtures by an aggregate score of 8-0, also beating Manchester United, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham to nil in the league.

But their outstanding defence had a couple of scares against Atletico and backing Arsenal to win and both teams to score is a tempting bet against Palace.

Julian Alvarez almost pounced on a David Raya error, shooting narrowly wide, and the former Manchester City forward also hit the crossbar at the Emirates Stadium.

Key centre-back Gabriel is a fitness doubt for Arsenal and, although Cristhian Mosquera has impressed in his early outings, Palace should be confident of breaching the home defence.

The Eagles played their part in three high-scoring encounters last season, losing 3-2 in the EFL Cup and 5-1 in the league in December before a 2-2 draw at Arsenal in April.

Eberechi Eze, who scored in the last of those games, is now starring for Arsenal but Palace’s front three of Yeremy Pino, Ismaila Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta merits respect.

Their 19-game unbeaten run ended with an unfortunate 2-1 defeat at Everton but they drew 3-3 with highflying Bournemouth at Selhurst Park last weekend thanks to Mateta’s second-half hat-trick.

Both teams’ midweek European exertions may increase the chances of errors at the back and Arsenal, despite missing injured captain Martin Odegaard, should come out on top in a lively game.

Spanish scrapper Zubimendi could collect a card

Martin Zubimendi has been an instant hit in the Arsenal midfield and the tenacious Spain international is an eye-catching price to be booked against Palace.

Zubimendi has picked up only one yellow card in his first eight league appearances – in August’s 1-0 defeat at Liverpool – but he was booked in all three of the Gunners’ Champions League games.

Mateta may unsettle Gunners’ defence again

Before this round of fixtures, only Erling Haaland had attempted more shots than Mateta’s 28 and the Palace striker scored a fourth-minute opener in last season’s EFL Cup defeat at Arsenal.

He beat Raya with a brilliant chip in the league game in north London and should have had a fourth goal against Bournemouth last weekend, missing a glorious chance to win the game in the 99th minute.

Both teams to score

Arsenal’s defence is a tough nut to crack but Crystal Palace scored inside the first 27 minutes in all three of last season’s meetings with the Gunners.

Jurrien Timber to commit one or more fouls

The Arsenal right-back is an uncompromising tackler and he has committed at least one foul in seven of his eight league appearances this term.

Jean-Philippe Mateta to have one or more shots on target

Mateta followed up his first international goal for France with a hat-trick against Bournemouth and scored on both visits to the Emirates Stadium in 2024-25.
