Real Madrid vs Barcelona preview
In a week which has been overshadowed by La Liga’s shenanigans off the pitch, the action on it looks likely to be scintillating as Barcelona visit Real Madrid for the first meeting between the two heavyweights of the season.
Spanish football has been embroiled in the controversy surrounding the plan for Barca to play Villarreal in Miami all season but now that scheme has been shelved, there is the small matter of El Clasico.
Xabi Alonso’s hosts go into the game two points clear despite their 5-2 hammering at the hands of rivals Atletico, while Barcelona suffered their own recent chastening defeat, losing 4-1 to Sevilla.
The last six meetings have produced four or more goals so expect fireworks at the Bernabeu, where the hosts will be trying to snap a run of four defeats in a row to their bitter rivals.
As Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo proved throughout their time on either side of this divide, it is in these games that players’ reputations are made and Lamine Yamal could take another step on his road to stardom.
The 18-year-old already has three goals and five assists from six starts in all competitions and with Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski injured, the Spanish international will have to step up for Barca.
Ferland Mendy and David Alaba are expected to miss out through injury so a huge weight of responsibility will be on the shoulders of third-choice Real Madrid left-back Alvaro Carreras and he is likely to struggle to contain the brilliant Yamal.

Both teams to score
Both teams have scored in seven of Barcelona’s last eight games and a repeat of that is fancied thanks to Hansi Flick’s attacking style.
Over 3.5 goals
The last six meetings between these two have gone over 3.5 goals and considering both teams have injuries in defensive areas, the same looks likely again.
Franco Mastantuono to be shown a card
The hosts’ combative youngster has already been booked three times in six La Liga starts and may struggle to keep his cool on such a big occasion.
