Apple TV’s Perfect ‘True Detective’ Replacement Dominates Streaming

True Detective returned for a successful fourth season seven years after Season 3 aired. Subtitled “Night Country,” the season was largely a hit due to its Alaska setting. Apple TV has released another show with a similar setting, and it is dominating the streamer’s top ten chart. The Last Frontier has been airing for five weeks and is currently at the top of the chart, according to current data from FlixPatrol. It has dethroned fan-favorite dramas like The Morning Show and Slow Horses, which are also releasing new episodes weekly.
Set in one of the coldest places on Earth, The Last Frontier is a crime thriller created by The Blacklist creator Jon Bokenkamp. Unlike True Detective, which explores crime with some supernatural undertones, The Last Frontier grounds its premise in government conspiracies. At the center of it all is U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke), who is tasked with overseeing law and order in his remote, tight-knit community. However, things take a turn when a prisoner transport airplane crashes on the tundra. The show’s official logline explains:
“Remnick’s jurisdiction is turned upside down when a prison transport plane crashes in the remote wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates. Tasked with protecting the town he’s vowed to keep safe, he begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching and devastating implications.”
The Last Frontier features Bokenkamp’s signature themes, including criminal masterminds, government conspiracies, and complex federal officers. Bokenkamp wrote the show alongside Richard D’Ovidio. Other cast members include Dominic Cooper (Havlock), Haley Bennett (Sidney), Simone Kessell (Sarah), Dallas Goldtooth (Hutch), Tait Blum (Luke), and Alfre Woodard (Bradford).
What’s Going On With ‘True Detective’ Season 5?
Since HBO renewed the show for a fifth season following the success of Season 4, updates have been rolling in, with writer-showrunner Issa López landing in Jamaica Bay, New York, as her next location. Nicolas Cage is in talks to lead the season, whose details are being kept under wraps. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful,” HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi, said in an interview. Production is set to start imminently, with a targeted 2027 launch date.
In the meantime, new episodes of The Last Frontier are available to stream on Fridays on Apple TV. The logline for this week’s episode reads: “Fairbanks is hit with a mass power outage. Sarah spots someone suspicious in the ER. Sidney tries to get control of a key piece of evidence.”
