That marked the latest setback for McCain, who as a rookie last season averaged 15.3 points in 23 games before injuring his left knee in a December game against Indiana. He said Sept. 2 that he was “on pace” to return for the opening tipoff.
McCain appeared in 23 games last season and led all rookies with an average of 15.3 points. He also averaged 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 25.7 minutes while finishing fourth among rookies with a 3-point percentage of 38.3%.
McCain set an NBA rookie record by making at least three 3s in eight consecutive games last November when he also scored 20 or more points in seven straight games. He started eight games and was an instant fan favorite out of Duke in large part after amassing nearly 5 million followers as a TikTok sensation.
McCain earned Eastern Conference rookie of the month honors for November.
Philadelphia (5-1) has gotten off to a strong start this season behind the play of star guard Tyrese Maxey and rookie standout VJ Edgecombe. Entering Tuesday’s game against Chicago, the Sixers are No. 1 in the Eastern Conference and they rank 12th in effective field goal percentage.
But they have outperformed their shot quality (which ranks 28th, according to tracking data) and rank in the top 10 in each of the other four factors on offense.
Big man Joel Embiid, the Kia MVP in 2022-23, has returned to the lineup after injuries slowed him in 2024-25 and is averaging 17.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg in 22.3 minutes per game. Guard Paul George is still recovering from his own knee surgery and has yet to play this season.
