Mexico City Grand Prix preview

The qualifying session for Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix (8pm GMT start) provided another twist in the Formula 1 world championship race as Lando Norris produced a fantastic lap to secure his first pole position in seven races.

The British driver received an even bigger boost as there will be three cars between him and the first of his title rivals on the grid, as Max Verstappen could manage only fifth and will have to get past the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, plus the Mercedes of George Russell, before he can even have a crack at Norris.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri continued his form slump when setting only the eighth-fastest time, although he will start seventh as Carlos Sainz, last year’s race winner in Mexico for Ferrari, has a five-place grid penalty and will drop down to 12th.

Norris has looked quick all weekend and is a best-priced 1-2 to take his sixth win of the season and his first for six races on Sunday night. The first lap of the race will be crucial as the long run down to the first corner in Mexico gives the cars behind a chance to slipstream, but if he can stay ahead and get into clear air he should be capable of pulling clear.

Racing Post Sport followers are in good shape with our 18-1 each-way pick Charles Leclerc second on the grid and the Ferrari man is no bigger than 5-1 to provide the Italian team with their first race win since this event last year. If he gets a solid start he should at least be capable of securing a podium finish, but the same also applies to his teammate Lewis Hamilton in third.

Hamilton would be the beneficiary of a tow down to the first corner if Norris chooses not to switch across the track to block Leclerc and the British driver appears to be growing in confidence after a tough year. He has finished fourth four times in his first season with Ferrari, including in Austin last week, and his first podium with the Scuderia may not be far away.

He could be backed for a podium finish at evens, but preference is to aim higher and take him each-way to win the race (even with only two places) given the potential for skirmishing and mistakes ahead of him.

Verstappen has struggled with the handling of his car in Mexico and was so concerned about his long-run pace that he spent time working on that in the third practice session rather than maximising his one-lap speed.

Our early points-finish selection of Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull still has solid prospects even though he failed to qualify for Q3. He will start in the points-paying positions in tenth place and is 4-6 to stay there. He usually performs better in the race than on low fuel and can build on last week’s seventh place in Texas.
