‘I could have killed them!’ Lawson had near-miss with two people on track during race

Liam Lawson was involved in a shocking incident during the Mexican Grand Prix when he encountered two people on the track at turn one. The pair appeared to be marshals.

The incident occured at the beginning of lap three after the Racing Bulls driver left the pits. Lawson had made an early pit stop to replace a damaged front wing.

The track was under racing conditions when Lawson arrived at turn one and was astonishing to see two figures running across the track between turns one and two.

“Mate, the fuck!” Lawson exclaimed. “Oh my god, are you kidding me?”

“Did you see that?” he asked race engineer Ernesto Desiderio.

“Yeah, saw it,” Desiderio replied. “Yep, well done to avoid that.”

“Oh my god, mate,” said Lawson. “I could have fucking killed them, mate.”

Near-misses involving marshals are a serious safety hazard for obvious reasons. Similar situations happened in Monaco and Imola in recent years.

Six drivers encountered a cluster of marshals working on the track at Imola under Safety Car conditions during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The drivers were lapping at speed, as they were allowed to under the rules at the time.

The year before Sergio Perez had a similar near-miss during the Monaco Grand Prix. This also occured under a Safety Car period, which was not the case during Lawson’s near-miss today.

The FIA has been contacted for comment.
