Jamal Murray lands on Nuggets injury report ahead of Friday’s NBA Cup game

Jamal Murray has been a man on a mission to start the season for the Denver Nuggets. After a handful of slow starts to the year in previous campaigns, his hot start has been exactly what the Nuggets have needed to hit the ground running this past week.

However, that momentum could be halted, as the 28-year-old guard landed on Denver’s injury report following the big win over the New Orleans Pelicans. He is listed as questionable for Friday’s NBA Cup game against the Portland Trail Blazers with left calf tightness.

Cam Johnson is listed as probable with right shoulder inflammation. He initially hurt it in Monday’s game against Minnesota, but was feeling well enough to give it a go on Wednesday. David Adelman said that it’s a nerve issue.

For Murray, he was seen on the bench dealing with the issue all throughout the last game, but still ended up playing 25 minutes, the fourth-most on the team. This is the exact same injury he battled in the 2024 postseason, an ailment that clearly bothered him against a physical Timberwolves team in the Conference Semifinals.

To start the season, Murray has averaged 27 points per game on 50/41/94 shooting splits, numbers that look like his performance against the Lakers in the 2023 Western Conference Finals when he averaged 30 points on similar, elusive splits

For his career, Murray’s averages in October have been way below his regular averages, as he’s tallied just 15.8 points per game in the opening month throughout his career. He’s made a big jump this season in hopes of capturing his first All-Star selection, but if this injury keeps him out for a bit, it could derail the much-needed momentum he’s built out of the gates.

Friday’s game against Portland tips off at 8:00 p.m. MDT.
