More than 100 firefighters battle blaze at rubbish tip in Sydney’s south-west

More than 100 firefighters are battling a large fire at a rubbish tip in Sydney’s south-west.

Crews and more than a dozen trucks are currently at a waste transfer facility on Barrow Road in Spring Farm, near Camden, which was first reported about 11.30am.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the flames were situated at a 100-metre-long and 40-metre-high shed that contains several waste products for processing.

“We do have it contained, however, it is going to smoulder for some time,” he said.

“The information we have using thermal image cameras is the fire is burning in a pit, which is extremely difficult.

“There is a fair bit of smoke around, but it is in a pretty isolated area, to the south and east of the residents.”

Dewberry said the chemicals, lithium batteries and other batteries at the facility have not been impacted, and firefighters have been able to stop the fire from spreading to those materials.

Fire and Rescue NSW has issued a smoke alert due to the black plumes of smoke billowing over the area, with nearby residents and businesses advised to keep their doors, windows, and vents closed.

No injuries have been reported, and all people working at the site have been accounted for.

NSW Ambulance, NSW Police and the Environment Protection Authority are also on scene to assist.

Crews are monitoring the water run-off and will ensure that it is safe.
