West Virginia enters quiet 2025 with no statewide elections, gearing up for a busy 2026

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. — The state of West Virginia doesn’t have any statewide elections in 2025, although it does mean that prep work is currently being done as next year will be a busy one.
This isn’t the first time in recent years the election calendar has been this way as this last happened in 2023. This will be a quiet year, but starting in early 2026 the state’s election cycle will start to get ramped up.
“Things have swung to one political party right now and there might not be as much interest,” West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner said. “But our filing period does not start until January, so I think you’ll see a lot more of the signs. Not that any of us want to see the roadways covered with political signs, but that’ll happen. In January, I think it will start to hit hot and heavy in West Virginia.”
The West Virginia primary is scheduled for May 12, 2026.
