Fabrizio Romano Shares Big Update on Whether Brendan Rodgers Faces Sack After Hearts Loss

Celtic board members and other influential figures at Parkhead have not made a final decision on whether to relieve Brendan Rodgers of his duties after his side fell eight points adrift of the Scottish Premiership summit following the defeat to Hearts last weekend, GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano has revealed in his latest newsletter.

Although captain Callum McGregor cancelled out Dane Murray’s own goal early in the first half, Alexandros Kyziridis and Lawrence Shankland got their names on the scoresheet after the interval to ensure the Bhoys would leave Tynecastle empty-handed and fall further behind in their bid to defend their title.

Bhoys Have Not Made Final Decision to Axe Rodgers

Key decision-makers at Parkhead have stopped short of making a final call on whether to sack Rodgers, according to Romano, but the Northern Irish tactician’s future is under threat and his situation should be watched closely over the course of the coming days. When asked whether a change could be made in the hot-seat, the respected journalist said in his latest GMS newsletter:

“There are no indications at this stage. For sure, it’s a situation to follow, but there has been no final decision on this at this stage.”

Rodgers has guided Celtic to back-to-back Scottish Premiership crowns since returning to Parkhead for a second spell in charge in 2023, when he was named as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, but the latest setback at the hands of table-toppers Hearts resulted in his side giving themselves an uphill battle in the race to be crowned champions again this term.

The loss at Tynecastle was the Bhoys’ second successive domestic defeat as it came seven days after also being consigned to a 2-0 reverse by Dundee, thanks to a Clark Robertson effort and Cameron Carter-Vickers own goal, although there was a Europa League victory over Sturm Graz on Thursday.

Celtic were also forced to drop into Europe’s secondary competition as they were eliminated from the Champions League in the play-off round by Kazakhstan-based side Kairat Almaty following a penalty shoot-out, which resulted in the pressure increasing on Rodgers.

The 52-year-old’s two stints at the Celtic helm have come either side of managing Leicester City. During his time with the Glasgow heavyweights, he has guided them to four Scottish Premiership crowns, as many Scottish League Cup wins and three Scottish Cup successes.
