Letters to the Editor: Wirral veteran blasts ‘shameful’ Upton parade decision

This letter is in response to events covered in a recent news article published by Birkenhead News. Organiser ‘understands’ council reasons for not being able to hold Upton Remembrance parade
Dear Editor,
As someone born and bred on the Wirral, and as a proud veteran of the British Army, I am utterly disgusted and heartbroken by your decision to cancel the Upton Remembrance Parade.
Remembrance Sunday is not a “nice-to-have” community event. It is a sacred day a time-honoured tradition where we pause, together as a nation, to remember those who laid down their lives for our freedoms. Men and women who never came home. Comrades who stood shoulder to shoulder and paid the ultimate price.
To cancel such an occasion is nothing short of shameful. It insults not only the fallen, but also those of us who served, those still serving, and the families who have carried the burden of loss for generations.
Let me be perfectly clear: I, along with hundreds of others, will defy this disgraceful decision. I will be at the cenotaph in Upton on Remembrance Sunday. I will stand in silence, head bowed, to honour my fallen brothers and sisters as I have every year, and as I always will.
If you truly intend to enforce this ban, then I wish you the best of luck instructing the police to arrest veterans men and women who once wore the Queen’s (and now the King’s) uniform for paying their respects. The very same veterans who defended this country, now being silenced and brushed aside in fear of “upsetting” a minority. How dare you!
You’ve turned your back on the very people who ensured you had the right to make such decisions in the first place. It’s an absolute disgrace.
Lest we forget.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Richardson, MBA
Ex Warrant Officer
The King’s Regiment
Veteran, British Army
Proud Son of the Wirral
