It might be small in size, but a picture perfect fishing village in Northumberland that ‘everyone returns to’ has just seen its profile boosted massively, thanks to it being home to a pub that has been ranked as one of the best in the UK. And it experts at the internationally renowned Conde Nast Traveller who have given it their firm seal of approval.

If you’re a regular reader of ChronicleLive, you’ll be well aware of the fact that we loved to champion all that’s great and good about our fabulous North East from food and drink, to the top attractions, the best walks, most dramatic castles to check out and the best beaches. And, speaking of castles and beaches, it’s a village at the coast in Northumberland, with the striking Dunstanburgh Castle as its backdrop, that has come in for fine praise from Conde Nast, more specifically its local, The Ship Inn.

A family friendly pub with a great reputation for serving up hearty food and welcoming a host of brilliant music acts, The Ship hugely impressed the Conde Nast writers, who described it as a ‘tiny pub’ that ‘sits in the middle of a horseshoe of whitewashed cottages set around a village green where a cluster of trestle tables face the sea.’

They urged any readers who find themselves in the vicinity of Low Newton to order a pint of something brewed on site at The Ship’s own microbrewery, while also recommending the food menu lobster, caught from Newton Bay, by local fisherman. As well as being the proud home of the now acclaimed Ship Inn, Low Newton also boasts a vast sandy beach, which is a perfect summer escape, or somewhere to go for a brisk and bracing walk in the chiller months.

Owner of The Ship, Christine Forsyth, moved to Low Newton in 1999 and remains a big fan of the area, writing on the pub’s website: ‘To stand on the beach on a moonlight night and hear the seals calling from the rocks, to watch the path of the moon on the sea and see the fingers of Dunstanburgh castle stand black against the sky or to watch the sun rise over the sea on a glorious summer morning – these are the things that make Low Newton the very special and unique place it is. And make people return time and again.’
