Starmer accuses Reform MP of ‘shocking racism’

Nigel Farage has said he is unhappy with a Reform UK MP’s “ugly” remarks about advertising.

Mr Farage joined earlier condemnation from Sir Keir Starmer of Sarah Pochin’s comments that it drove her mad to see adverts “full of black people, full of Asian people”.

Ms Pochin, who is Reform’s MP for Runcorn and Helsby, later apologised for any offence caused and said her comments had been “phrased poorly”.

Mr Farage told a press conference on Monday: “The words that Sarah Pochin used in response to a caller into TalkRadio on Saturday morning were without doubt ugly and taken on their own could be read to be very, very unpleasant indeed.

“I am unhappy with what she has done. I can’t underestimate that and she fully knows how I feel.”

Earlier in the day Sir Keir insisted that Farage, the Reform leader, had “questions to ask” over the remarks and said he must condemn them or risk showing “absolutely no leadership”.

Sir Keir told the BBC: “It’s shocking racism and it’s the sort of thing that’ll tear our country apart. And tells you everything about Reform. And Nigel Farage has some questions to ask.

“Either he doesn’t consider it racist, which I think is shocking in itself, or he does think it is and shows absolutely no leadership.”
