Port Vale vs Stockport preview
Birmingham and Wrexham stole the headlines in League One last term, meaning Stockport’s quietly brilliant 87-point season went under the radar somewhat.
The Hatters went on to lose to Leyton Orient on penalties in the playoff semi-finals but they have not let that heartbreak hold them back and are again among the League One title favourites after picking up 25 points from their opening 13 matches.
Cardiff’s loss at Bolton and a draw between Stevenage and Bradford on Saturday mean Stockport can go top with a victory over Port Vale and Dave Challinor’s side are unlikely to spurn the opportunity.
They will have to be at their best to beat Vale, though, as the hosts are beginning to shown signs of life after a disappointing start to the campaign.
Darren Moore’s side have won three and lost only one of their last six League One outings and will put up a fight. However, poor finishing could again prove costly.
Vale are League One’s biggest xG underperformers, scoring just 11 goals but creating 18.5 expected goals. Stockport will not let their hosts off lightly if they waste chances.
County have won their last three League One matches, losing none of their last six, and their quality should shine through at Vale Park, with the Hatters fancied to take top spot.
Norwood to show class
Stockport’s success is no fluke, with heavy investment meaning they have one of the strongest squads in League One. The Hatters have a number of talented players but Oliver Norwood is undoubtably the best of the bunch.
The former Sheffield United midfielder should really be playing at a higher level and he is showing his class in the third tier, having scored four goals and provided as many assists in 13 league appearances this term.
Norwood has scored three goals and set up two more in his last seven appearances and looks a big price to punish Port Vale.
Stockport set for narrow success
The Hatters are heading for top spot but they may have to battle hard to get there.
Port Vale have conceded just two goals in their last five matches and can keep things close, meaning a third straight 1-0 win for Stockport appeals at a big price.
Port Vale vs Stockport Bet Builder
Stockport to win
The Hatters are unbeaten in six league games, have won each of their last three and are 12 points better off than their hosts.
Under 3.5 goals
None of Stockport’s last six League One games, or any of Port Vale’s last eight matches in all competitions, have gone over 3.5 goals.
Tyler Onyango
The combative Hatter has picked up two yellows and one red in just five League One games this season, making him an obvious card candidate at Vale Park.
