It’s easy to imagine that people like Joe Walsh are exactly the same once they get offstage.

He was never one to put on an act every single time he got in front of his audience, and while his partying was the stuff of legend, there’s no doubt that he believed he was probably invincible once or twice in his life. But as one of the few wild men that were able to see the second half of mortality, he got back to the land of the living with more than a few great stories to tell from his early days.

Because when looking at his track record, Walsh had the kind of creative golden ticket that most classic rock fans wish they had. He already had the opportunity to jam with Jimi Hendrix once, and after getting called one of the best in the business by the likes of Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend, it wasn’t out of the question for him to start rubbing elbows with some of the true legends of rock history.

While Walsh has practically become an honourary family member to half of the Eagles, the fact that he’s still standing after being next to Keith Moon for so long is honestly a miracle. Walsh often called meeting Moon one of the scariest things that ever happened to him, and while ‘Moon the Loon’ could take partying to levels no one had imagined, Walsh was certainly no slouch in that department, either.

He was the king of room trashing throughout the 1970s, and his stints hanging out with people like John Belushi were the stuff of legend, but that was only matched by his knack for melody. Despite his squawky voice, hearing him sing about his lavish lifestyle on ‘Life’s Been Good’ is actually charming in its own weird way. Anyone would consider a rockstar talking about losing his drivers license for speeding too much a little odd, but it almost sounds wholesome coming out of his mouth.

But there had to come a time when he had to come up for air, and after Eagles reunited, he finally had the courage to get up on that stage completely sober. It wasn’t going to be an easy transition after drinking for so long, but after working on tunes like ‘Help Me Through the Night’ and ‘Pretty Maids All in a Row’ live, Walsh had other great ideas for what he wanted to say later down the line.

Eagles may have taken their final bow on Long Road out of Eden, but on Analog Man was the guitarist’s opportunity to tell his life story a bit more accurately on ‘One Day at a Time’, saying, “I just wanted a chance to tell my story. I just wanted to tell what it was like and what it is like now, and not embellish anything. It can be a real challenge for a songwriter to get to the essence of the topic without padding it with all of the recovery slogans that we say, but I think I did it on this song.”

And whereas a tune like ‘Last Good Time in Town’ is clearly meant to be played for laughs on his stint with Eagles, ‘One Day at a Time’ isn’t necessarily an anti-drug PSA or anything. Walsh is doing his best to be as bluntly honest as he can be, and while he might have fond memories of smashing up hotel rooms, there was no way for him to throw everything away after one too many nights out.

‘Life’s Been Good’ is always going to be one of the most celebrated tunes in his catalogue, but ‘One Day at a Time’ sounds like it’s coming from a man who’s finally found peace. He was always going to be the court jester in the middle of Eagles, but when he’s finally free to be himself on his own, he could drop all the hangups and actually have some wisdom to impart.
