Woman shot after refusing to comply during traffic stop, driving toward officers, police say

DETROIT – A woman was shot during an altercation with Detroit police on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the shooting happened just after 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025, and stems from a dispute during a traffic stop.

An officer pulled over an SUV with an invalid license plate.

Police said the driver refused to give her license and registration and wouldn’t get out of the car.

She allegedly called 911 and asked to speak to another officer.

Other officers arrived at the scene as backup and got the woman out of her car, but police said she still refused to comply, and pepper spray was used.

The woman then got back into her SUV and drove off with an officer hanging onto her car, according to police.

Officers were able to box her in at Concord and Outer Drive.

The woman then allegedly started to drive toward officers, and police fired multiple shots.

After that, the woman drove off again and ended up in the parking lot of a police facility near Sherwood and 7 Mile Road in Detroit.

“Oftentimes, we have people that think they don’t have to show their driver’s license, their registrations; that’s required if you’re going to operate on a Michigan road, and it’s also required that you don’t flee and elude,” said Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison. “That is a felony. So when you do that and make that choice, you just went from a civil infraction to a felony.”

Police said the woman was struck in both of her arms and her leg, but is in stable condition.

The department said it plans to release body camera footage of the altercation.
