Made In Chelsea star Sam Vanderpump has just five years to live unless he gets an organ transplant, he has shared. The E4 star, nephew of Real Housewives icon Lisa Vanderpump, revealed the news in the latest episode of the reality show.
He explained that he has been diagnosed with irreversible end-stage liver disease. The 28-year-old was born with congenital hepatic fibrosis of the liver and polycystic kidney disease, but it stayed dormant until he got the flu in December and almost died. That, with his asthma, saw Sam’s organs struggle to cope.
He opened up with co-star Ollie Locke in this week’s episode, saying “there is no hope” that his liver would fix itself.
Sam fell ill last December and discovered dormant health issues
Sam said: “There is no hope of my liver getting better and he said I wouldn’t be having this call with you if I thought you could make it through the next four or five years.
“They’re sending me for liver transplant assessment, so yeah.”
He went on: “The way I look at it is I’m healthy now, hopefully I remain healthy all the way up until I’ll get a call and go in for surgery and then I wake up and I’ll be healthier.”
Sam previously suffered liver and kidney failure, which caused sepsis and he “nearly died”.
He was rushed to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in December with fly, which was when he learned the severity of what was actually happening.
Sam was told that if he had gone to hospital 24 hours later it would have been too late.
This week’s episode of Made In Chelsea saw the NHS Organ Donation brand Sam an “inspiration”.
On Instagram, they said: “You may have seen in tonight’s episode of Made In Chelsea, that one of the cast members Sam Vanderpump needs an organ transplant.
“Our thoughts are with Sam and his family as they face this news. We hope that his courage in speaking out will offer inspiration to others.
“Sadly, thousands of people are currently waiting for a life-saving transplant because not enough people agree to donate their organs.
“If you want to be an organ donor and save lives after your death, please confirm your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and ensure your loved ones know and support your decision.”
