One Of Prime Video’s Highest-Rated Crime Thrillers Gets Major Season 2 Update

One of Prime Video’s biggest crime thriller shows, The Assassin, gets a season 2 update. Debuting on Prime Video in July, the six-episode British series centers on a retired professional killer (played by Orphan Black: Echoes star Keeley Hawes) and her estranged son Edward (Bates Motel and The Good Doctor lead Freddie Highmore). The duo has to work together to survive on a remote Greek island.

Written by the duo of Harry and Jack Williams, who previously created the hit Netflix thriller The Tourist with Jamie Dornan, The Assassin proved to be a similar success. Its debut episode ranks as the highest-performing of the year among Prime Video’s British originals, beating out other notable titles such as the buzzy romance drama The Girlfriend.

Deadline reports that The Assassin season 2 is in the works at Prime Video. Although a deal is still underway and Prime Video declined to comment on the news, development is happening.

The thriller’s resonance with audiences appears to be paving the way for another installment. According to the report, the thriller ranks as Prime Video’s highest-rated U.K. original drama of 2025. The Assassin episode 1 was watched by 1.6 million viewers, putting it well ahead of The Girlfriend‘s most-watched episode, which drew 973,435 viewers. It also beat out The Rig, Fear, and the recent premiere of Harlan Coben’s Lazarus.

This is particularly significant for Prime Video, which finds its biggest hits in the U.K. with unscripted programming. Clarkson’s Farm season 4 debuted to 5 million viewers in May. And, in April, LOL: Last One Laughing UK reached an audience of more than 3 million. But it is also significant because Prime Video has struggled to launch new and popular thrillers this year, having to rely largely on the established Reacher franchise.

Countdown and Butterfly were both cancelled mere weeks after the end of their first seasons, despite trending on Amazon’s charts and being led by popular television stars in Jensen Ackles and Daniel Dae Kim, respectively. It would bode well if the British crime drama could take a step toward reversing the trend.

With a cast that includes Gerald Kyd, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Devon Terrell, David Dencik, Alan Dale, Gina Gershon, Jack Davenport, and Richard Dormer, The Assassin carries an approval rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews. The audience score is more negative, coming in at 44%, but it could pick up momentum with a season 2 pick-up.
