Zingerman’s store recalls candy products for cross-nut contamination

PITTSFIELD TWP., MI — Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory has recalled two popular candy bars due to potential “life-threatening” cross-nut contaminations.
The candy wing of Zingerman’s, 3723 Plaza Drive, announced the recall on Friday, Oct. 24, after finding traces of cashews in its full-size Peanut Butter Crush Bars and peanuts in its Ca$hew Cow Bars.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews or peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the announcement stated.
The products were distributed to retailers in Michigan and New York and were available in stores, according to the announcement.
The company issued a recall after it was discovered its Peanut Butter Crush Bars contained unlisted cashews and its Ca$hew Cow Bars contained unlisted peanuts in their packaging.
The announcement stated the contamination was caused by a “temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes” and the company has taken steps to resolve the problem.
Ari Weinzweig, co-founder of Zingerman’s, wrote the recall happened about a month ago and has yet to hear of any “negative impact” from the contamination.
He also wrote the company wishes to follow proper food and drug regulation procedures and “safety is paramount.”
No illnesses had been reported as of the recall announcement on Oct. 24. Staff asked customers who have purchased either product to return it to receive a full refund.
The Peanut Butter Crush Bars are sold in two-ounce yellow and purple boxes with the label Peanut Butter Crush. The Ca$hew Cow Bars are sold in two-ounce light blue and yellow boxes with the label Cashew Cow.
The company marks both products with Lot#174250.
The Food and Drug Administration did not report a recall on its website.
